Seagull Services Celebrates Older Americans Month

Summary: During Older Americans Month in May, Seagull Services paid tribute to its oldest program participants. The group of participants who range in age from their mid-60s all the way through their 80s were honored by the staff and other residents with special recognition on May 20th. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of music and refreshments to mark the occasion. Older Americans Month was established in 1963 as a time to acknowledge the contributions of older persons in our country, and every U.S. president since John F. Kennedy, who established it, has issued proclamations asking that the nation pay tribute to older persons in their communities. more…

Seagull Services COVID-19 Protocol System recognized as model

Summary: Over the past year, Seagull Services has worked to provide as many different programs as feasible while keeping our participants and employees healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seagull’s protocol system developed late last year in the wake of rising case numbers has been recognized as a model system by the state Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). Seagull CEO Dan Stanislawczyk has been asked to present the model to other area nonprofit leaders. “I developed the protocol system as we saw rising numbers of COVID cases last fall. This was done in coordination with the Palm Beach County Health Department, School District, physicians and state agencies. It lets each member of our team know their roles and responsibilities for each protocol,” Stanislawzcyk said. “We’re very proud that our system has been recognized as a model that other agencies could use as well.” more…

Seagull Services announces new banquet staff training program

Summary: Seagull Services is launching a new training opportunity in connection with its Supported Employment program to train people for work in the banquet industry. Students are learning how to prepare tables for banquets and other food service settings to better prepare them for potential employment in the culinary and banquet industry. It’s one of three new training opportunities that Seagull Services is offering its Supported Employment participants. Seagull has partnered with Johnson & Wales University, one of the premier culinary training programs in the nation, to provide training and evaluation of the students’ work. Jim M. Flader, M.Ed., CHE, WSET, CSW, CDRA, Assistant Professor of the College of Food, Innovation and Technology, will be participating in an online session to work with the students as they master three types of table settings: basic, casual and formal. more…

SPOTLIGHT on Olivia Morris

Summary: Meet Olivia Morris, Ed.S., Director of Supported Employment at Seagull Services. She joined the staff two years ago. Ms. Morris is a former administrator at Palm Beach State College, Miami Dade College, and Sylvan Learning Center. Her educational background includes a bachelor of science degree from Florida State University, master’s in Educational Leadership and an Educational Specialist degree with a concentration in Adult and Community Education from Florida Atlantic University. Under her leadership, Seagull’s Supported Employment program has been formalized with a curriculum that combines the necessary job-seeking and life skills as well as career exploration through site visits and internships. The best part, she says, is creating a positive learning environment where our students and clients can learn life and employability skills to help them transition into independence. more…

Summary: Seagull Services is pleased to announce that Judith L. Dynia and Jim Weber have joined its Board of Directors. Each will serve for a two-year term. Judy Dynia is a career professional in the field of fundraising and development, having worked for over 15 years for The New York City Police Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides resources for innovative NYPD programs that help to make New York City a safer place to live, work and visit. Summary: In honor of the life and legacy of Barbara Nurenberg, Seagull Services has created the Barbara Nurenberg Legacy Fund. Ms. Nurenberg served as Seagull’s President and CEO from November, 2013, until she passed away on November 29, 2018. Seagull’s adult program participants become performers, host presentations on Black History Month and National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Summary: This quarter, Seagull Services program participants saw themselves through a different lens as they took part in performances that marked Black History Month in February and National Developmental Disabilities Awareness month in March. Beginning with research that broadened their knowledge of famous people of color in and famous individuals with disabilities, each participant played a role in a series of skits and music during performances at Seagull Services. Their skits depicted moments in the lives of several famous African Americans, including Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play baseball on an all-white team, Rosa Parks and her groundbreaking bus ride, and Katherine Johnson whose work on the NASA Space Program was portrayed in Hidden Figures. more…
