Camp Seagull travels across the country and around the world - virtually!

Wednesday, June 24, 2020

This summer, Camp Seagull is taking students on explorations farther than they’ve ever gone before. Of course they’re travelling virtually, but oh, the places they are going!

Operating Camp Seagull online meant that students wouldn’t be getting together each day at Seagull Academy for Independent Living, but it also meant they’d enjoy adventures together that they otherwise never would have experienced.

Camp opened on June 8 with Theme Parks as the first week’s theme. The participants already have “travelled” to Lego Land, Busch Gardens, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Disney World, and Universal Studios! Other themes include “Behind the Scenes”, “Adventure”, “Holidays and Celebrations”, “Around the World”, and “Road Trip Across America.”

Each day, campers log into a private Zoom chat for the morning activities, take a break for lunch, and then rejoin for afternoon activities. Any participants who choose can end the day with an hour dedicated to educational and supported employment instruction.

As always, camp includes arts and crafts, fitness, movies, and a lot of laughter. Recently they got a surprise visit from one of SAIL’s “Best Buddies,” Chrystie Tyler, who was participating from New York. During “Behind the Scenes” week where campers learned what goes on behind the scenes of movies and television shows, Chrystie provided a make-up tutorial, showing how a person might transform into a character.

By the time camp closes on July 24, participants will have visited places not only in Florida but across the country and around the world.
