SWA Supported Employment contract expands

Seagull Services Supported Employment Program participants are a familiar sight around the main administrative building of the Solid Waste Authority (SWA) as they’ve been providing custodial services there for more than 20 years. Under the supervision of a skilled custodial supervisor and job coach, individuals with disabilities have learned teamwork and the vocational skills needed to be successful in their work.

Recently, their presence  expanded to 8 of the 10 SWA locations and a total of 10 workers. Seagull won a bid to provide custodial service at six additional SWA sites. The expanded contract increases the number of individuals working at SWA from five to ten, but more importantly it creates jobs and job training for people who frequently have trouble getting a foot in the door due to a disability.

Seagull’s Supported Employment Program also allows the individuals it serves to learn pre-employment skills, including resume writing, workplace etiquette, and interview techniques. The program assists individuals with their job search and provides a job coach for on-the-job support when needed and helps them move on from the initial training and work experience when they are ready.
