Special Olympics Coach of the Year

The trio of Seagull staff who go above and beyond their job descriptions and also coach Seagull Services’ Special Olympics athletes were recognized recently with “Coach of the Year” honors from Palm Beach County Special Olympics for the 2017 fall season.

Joyce Hambrick, Director of Program Services, shares the honor with Howard Huff, Seagull Vocational Specialist, and Kristen Friedman, Seagull Case Manager. All three are long-time Special Olympics coaches who encourage Seagull Services’ athletes to do their best.

Hambrick  and Huff are former athletes themselves and use their backgrounds to help motivate Seagull’s athletes, who often comprise the largest group of participants at Special Olympics  competitions. Friedman was also a Special Olympics volunteer before joining Seagull’s staff.

“The athletes have a positive attitude and energy regardless of their abilities and skills, and I bring my motivation as an athlete myself to motivate and encourage them to fulfill their potential,” Hambrick said. “I gain as much as the athletes do because participating as a Special Olympics Coach gives me a great appreciation for what can be accomplished by anyone.”

Seagull athletes participate in Special Olympics year round, competing in track and field and bowling.
